Pressure-treated fences are made of softwood lumber that has been treated with chemicals to improve its durability against rot, decay, and insects. Most pressure-treated fences use pine. The wood is treated inside pressurized tanks, hence the name, so that the chemicals are absorbed deep within its grains and fibers.
Like cedar and vinyl fences, pressure-treated fences are a favorite amongst homeowners. There are a few reasons as to why this is the case.
One, pressure-treated wood is more affordable than other fence materials. For instance, you can save up to 30 to 40 percent if you use pressure-treated wood instead of redwood, which is another popular fence material. On average, pressure-treated wood also costs less than cedar; you can save $5 to $20 per linear foot if you use the former rather than the latter. Therefore, it is the most economical choice compared to other popular fencing material options.
As mentioned earlier, pressure-treated fences are also very durable – they are not easily scratched or dented, so they will last for a really long time. Pressure-treated wood is actually a lot stronger than untreated wood. It is able to absorb and endure more impact than the latter, so you may not have to replace your fencing even if minor accidents occur. If properly installed, they will stay in good condition for decades despite heavy rains, snow, and sunlight because they endure wear and tear well. In fact, they look better as they age!
Another benefit of using this material for your fence is that insects will not be able to eat through the wood. The material is treated with toxic chemicals that kill insects which are a top cause of wood degradation. And because pressure-treated fences are toxic to these insects, the wood will actually help keep them away from your house.
Pressure-treated fences are cost-effective and durable, plus they look really good around a home! If you want to save money and keep your fences for a long time, then this option is a perfect fit for you.

More traditionally, fences are made of wood like cedar and pine. However, vinyl fences (or polyvinyl chloride/PVC) have become more and more popular through the years. It mimics the look of wood fencing, but it is maintenance-free and can last virtually forever.
Vinyl fences are also very child-friendly. If you have children(or pets!) who like to play and run outside, vinyl fences are safe for them because the material does not splinter.
Another advantage of using vinyl over wood as a fence material is that it does not rot! It does not allow the growth of fungus either. Therefore, vinyl fences require less maintenance than traditional fences made of wood.
Vinyl is also flexible, which means the material bounces force upon impact, which is why a lot of ranch owners like vinyl fencing around their land. It won’t hurt animals like horses and cows in case they ran onto the fence. Its flexibility also makes it resistant to adverse effects of bad weather.
If you live in an area with consistent rains throughout the year, mud may stick to your fences, which will require cleaning up, although it is not that difficult to clean a vinyl fence. You can hose it off or wash it with a simple soap solution to remove any stains.
Vinyl does cost more than other fence materials. Vinyl is almost double the price of pressure-treated wood. However, because the material requires the least amount of maintenance and no treatment whatsoever, you can actually save money in the long-run. It is also easier to install than wood fences.
Vinyl fences are made to last a lifetime; you will not have to replace it because of degradation or water damage. It is also fire-resistant. Plus, it comes in a variety of colours and styles from which you can choose from. You can pick a vinyl fence that matches the design of your home.
As the name suggests, a post & rail fence consists of vertical posts and horizontal rails that are commonly made of pressure-treated wood that will resist rot, insects, and other causes of decay. You can choose a two-rail wood post or a three-rail wood post depending on the look you want to achieve and your budget. But before you decide on whether to get two or three rails, you first have to ask yourself if a post & rail fence suits you and your needs.
Post & rail fences are usually found in ranches. The low cost of post & rail fences makes them a popular option for ranch owners because they need to put fencing around a large area of land. Note also that two-rail wood posts are less expensive than three-rail wood posts. Obviously, the former requires fewer materials, so upfront costs are lower. It also takes less time to install the former, so installation will also cost less if you choose this option.
However, if you have large animals such as horses and cows on your property, you might need to install a three-rail wood post instead of two. This will ensure the safety of the animals while also making sure that they don’t escape your property. In other words, three-wood rail posts are better for animal containment. Of course, you can also combine the two types of post & rail fences if you wish. You can use two-rail wood posts around your home, and then use three-rail wood posts in areas where your animals live and roam.
But you don’t need to own animals or live on a ranch to install a post & rail fence. If you like the rustic quality that this type of fencing adds to a property, then by all means, install a post & rail fence around your home. Although you also have to consider privacy before making a decision. Unlike traditional wood and vinyl fences, a post & rail fence does not offer any privacy to a home. Neighbours and passersby can see through it, so they will have a good view of your property and home. If you live in a suburban area where the houses are close to each other, this may be a concern that you need to think about. If you want privacy, then a different type of fencing may be better for you.
Overall, a post & rail fence is a great fencing solution for big properties where both humans and animals live. Although it doesn’t offer privacy, it is effective in setting your property lines and keeping things in.
With wire fences, vertical wooden posts are installed to the ground, and then four to five rows of coated wire are run across them. It is a more cost-effective containment solution than a post & rail fence. It also prevents any harm to your animals in case they run onto the fence. The wires are flexible, so they will absorb the impact instead of hurting your animals. Another advantage of wire fences is that they don’t splinter, so your animals won’t get hurt if ever they make contact with the fence. In addition, wire fences require little maintenance. You won’t have to paint them or to apply treatment.
Wire fences can also be merged with post & rail fences. You can have a top wooden or PVC rail, and then wires for the bottom rows.
As the name suggests, mesh fences use wire mesh to create a barrier. It’s another cost-effective containment solution that will keep outsiders out of your property and your animals and belongings in. While post & rail fences and wire fences are good for big animals such as cows and horses, mesh fences are best for if you have small animals like dogs, cats, and chickens inside your property.
Electric fences keep your animals in and prevent them from ever escaping your property. Unlike what some may believe, the electric current that passes through the fence is not dangerous to animals. It actually mimics the interaction that horses experience in the wild. In their natural habitat, more dominant horses would nip at their herd members to keep them in line, and this is what the electric current tries to copy. The “nip” from the electric fence would train your horses to not go beyond the fence.
If you already have a wire or mesh fence installed around your property, you can turn them into an electric fence by installing a fence charger. However, this still depends on how your fence was installed.
Keep in mind that horse fences are not just for horses. You can install these kinds of fences for if you have cows, goats and other animals in your ranch.

We can build a great fence out of any material, but it’s good to know the facts before you choose which material you want for your fence.
Basic pressure treated lumber is still the most popular fencing material, because it is the most affordable and widely available option. It accounts for roughly 75% of fences built today. Some downsides to PT wood fencing are that it is susceptible to changing dimension, and “warping”. It also generally requires the most maintenance.
That being said, pressure treated treated wood is designed for long-term performance in Alberta’s outdoor applications, and still presents a very solid choice for your fence! We also use high quality corrosion-resistant nails for longer life. The preservative used on pressure treated lumber, resists the wood against fungal and insect decay, as well as moisture from exposure to provide maximum protection.
More exotic lumbers, like cedar, can be a beautiful alternative, and can circumvent many of the durability and maintenance concerns that come with pressure treated lumber.
Composite fencing has become extremely popular thanks to its durability and low maintenance requirements. It is still very affordable, and some believe it to present a better value in the long run since it’s unlikely to warp or split on you.
